This is an extract from a book written in 1946 (Butterfly Miracles and Mysteries by Bernard Acworth) that I had as a child, subsequently lost and have now just bought a copy for £6 (that included postage).

Acworth has some very odd ideas and was obsessed with migration. But there are some little nuggets. He was aware all those years ago (1946) that the Comma was recovering:
“Once scarce and local, this butterfly is now abundant over the whole of the southern half of England and is rapidly extending its range northwards”

But the comment about White Admiral was the one that really caught my eye.

Thats interesting. Single-hooded butterfly. It seems they do mean brooded, spelling error. Its good to see how things have changed when you see butterfly books or information about butterflies from the past and now. And about the comma, was that when Emma Hutchinson was going around the places that grew hops and telling people to collect the comma pupae before they burned the hops? I know they started recovering after she did this.
