Lambency diffuser

I saw the most beautiful photo of a Painted Lady on the website Wild about Britain, a Lambency diffuser was used. Does anyone know exactly what a diffuser is and how to use it?

Because the light from a flashgun can be rather hard and flat, diffusers, which are attached to the flashgun, are sometimes used to soften or reflect the light to give more even illumination.
