Photograhy help - moon and landscapes

I have been trying different photos latley and I have had trouble with moon shots and trying to get shots of the sunlight going through the trees and have had problems with this. Anybody got advice for this or general hints on getting intresting landscape shots?

I have a few pics, but I can't upload them now as I am on my laptop.

Is there a certian time of day to get pics of sunlight through trees? I live near 4-5 forests and wanted to get interesting photos in them.

On my compact, I have been using landscape mode and full digital zoom and I can get good shots of moon that way, but on my D-SLR, all I get is a bright object that resembles sun, although once or twice I did get the grey look, but too bright to see any markings.

Hi Dave, when taking pictures of the moon, I would suggest turning down the exposure.

For taking pictures of the sun through trees, you need a weak sun at a low angle, so morning / evening, or on the shorter days of the year are best.

The difficulty of getting interesting landscapes, depends a lot on where you live. Here in Hampshire although the scenery is quite beautiful, it is not dramatic. So to get the most out of the landscape, we have to make the best use of light, the sky, and the weather.
A good sky with nice clouds can make most landscapes look good, dawn and dusk are obviously going to look good, and at this time of year, you need to head out if there's been a hard frost, or snow. :)

Thanks Gary, I just had a look at your website, great pics there, love the deer ones and the landscape shots too, guess its more getting the right time to get a good photos.

If it is good this weekend, I am going to go out early in morning, maybe just around or just before sunrise to see what pics I can get. I have a good tripod and remote for my camera, so just have to wait for the right time I guess. I can get great sunset shots though. I have taken sunsets from the same hill for over a year, and many of them don't look the same (I'll post a few soon) so I'll just keep practising and see what I can do.

Hi Dave

For moon shots you have to realise that the moon is in full sun.
Try using f8 @ 1/250th for iso 100 or its equivalent. Always best to use a tripod.
Getting a large image is more of a problem unless you have long lenses.

Cheers

Further on shooting the moon, a full moon isn't the best time because features are lit from directly above. Much better pictures can be obtained during the various phases where shadows show up more detail. Once you've shot all the phases though, there's not a lot new going to happen unless you shoot when the moon is low in the sky and you can use ground based features to enhance your images.
