Fantastic shots - love the Brim on yellow flower. I see from EXIF that flash fired - but you never can tell from data what flash set up was - scuse pun but could you enlighten me as I'm keen to learn your techniques! (I'm a EOS 400D user). Also on EXIF it says focal length - i was never sure if this was the actual lens inuse or focal length at time of shot. I now realsie by fact that one was 300mm and one 77mm that it must be the latter so id love to know what lenses you used toachieve these shots too. I'm planning to buy the classic Sigma 150mm lens in next few weeks in hope of achieving simialr results, but now questioning if a 300mm would be better? Thanks for any help you can give me!

The top shot is fantastic, love the compilation of the butterfly and the flowers, you did well to stand off, and make the most of the background.

The last shot is a great close up, tons of detail and colour, should of kept it by for the December comp though.

No it makes no difference, I was just hopping that he might think it did, and therefore not think enter it, thanks Antony

Exif data suggests that the comma and red admiral were all shot at 150mm focal length so I'm guessing it's the Sigma 150. The last shot is astonishing. Did you use extension tubes?

Great shots, especially the first one. I love how you stood back and showed the flowers around the brimstone too. I like how the light shows through its wings and the yellow flowers around. I also love the last shot, great detail!

Thanks for all the kind words everyone.This is the setup I used for the shots that were taken with flash....


40d,sigma 150mm macro,20mm extension tube,430ex,coke can diffuser,flash bracket.I cant recommend the Sigma enough,its a great lens.

The natural light shots were taken with the 40D and my Tamron SP AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro.The Tamron was bought as an inexpensive alternative to the kit lens when I bought my first DSLR,the 350D.It is a fantastic lens for the price,but the Sigma is the quality glass!
I took these with the Tamron lens and natural light on the same day....

Just brilliant. The coke can reflector rang bells with me as I reported on one in a forum a few weeks ago (macro flash in photoforum) - just wondered if you were the chap on Flickr... http://www.flickr.com/groups/macroviewe ... 312315664/

If you get pics like this I'm gonna start drinking coke!

Incidentally I've been wondering how bet to get my speedlight of the Canon 400D hotshoe - what bracket & cable system are you using and doe you get to use E-TTL still? It looks like the flash lies nicely close to front of Sigma 150mm lens. Altho just realised you use 40d so prob different?
