Hundreds of small tortoiseshell butterflies were seen yesterday (13th,
September) afternoon at Puxton Moor nectaring on thistle. From Puxton
village head south-east on Puxton Lane. Just past the small industrial
site is a lane heading east, grid ST408632. About 150 yards along this
lane on the left is a rhine heading north with a footbridge across it.
The butterflies were along both banks.
Also seen was a single painted lady and several silver 'Y' moths.
It was wonderful to see this once common butterfly making an apparent
comeback in such numbers.
