Image taken at Alton Water, in Suffolk, near Tattingstone Wonder.
The breif veiw I had of the wing underside resembled that of a Green-veined White but the wing's upper pattern does not resemble anything in my guides. Is this a Green-veined White?
The majority of butterflies flying that day were Green-veined Whites.
The habitat is woodland margin alongside a large expanse of fresh water. There are also wild flower meadows and extensive bramble patches.

Re: White ID
Hi Paul, and welcome.
It certainly looks like a GVW to me. The amount of black marking is variable as with other species.

Re: White ID
This looks like a second brood female Green-veined White to me, but the markings look more spread than on normal individuals!

Re: White ID
Many thanks Folks. I thought it probably was a GVW but thought I'd better check
BTW, how do you determine between male and female in the species?

Re: White ID
The male has a single spot on the forewing, the female has two. Here's a male:PaulDyer wrote:how do you determine between male and female in the species?

And a female:
