A UK Butterfly Calendar 2009

Has anyone thought of a Butterfly calendar with photos from the UK Web Site? I asked Pete about it before he went away and suggested to put it on the forum for ideas. It would be nice I thought to have the winners of the monthly competitions included but no one to have two pages, so the runners up etc, also to try and have a different species on each page. With the front there'd be 13 photos. So what Pete asked me to do is ask, how many people would buy one, how much would you be willing to pay, or any idea's at all. After the initial cost all the profits to go to the Butterfly Conservation.

The last time this came up there were some positive replies but no one volunteered to organise it ... :D

I'd love to say I would but I'm moving house after seven years without even hoovering the place and I have new responsibilities this coming school year to get my head around. Anyone else up for it?

Funny you should ask that because I do Calendars and have said to Pete that I would do the art work and set it up and print, but I should make it clear that I am not looking to make money from this, on a small basis we all could do it for this web site. I could print on demand so there's no waste but I'm interested in other folks idea's. I have a sort of cottage industry and print all my own calendars.

That is extremely generous of you, Shirley!!

Let's get as much input as possible and when Pete gets back we can start fleshing ideas out (I'm only 'Admin' in the token sense that someone apart from Pete has to have editorial rights over inappropriate posts, spammers &c. for when he's on holiday; but I've never needed to use them).

I must say I liked the idea, seems like something people might like to see, it might even get more people intrested butterflies. Well, give it a while longer and see what happens, if not, it was a nice idea. I made a calander last year that I have to my best friend and she liked it a lot. It was a butterfly from every month, taken that month by me.

I think that's it's a great idea. Let's run it by Pete again when he gets home from his holiday.
I'd definitely by half a dozen a presents as well as one for myself.

Cheers
Denise

Sounds an excellent idea but one plea; no person to have more than two months.

hi
I like the sound of this idea! I could do with a better calander for 2009 :)
Especially if it includes photos from the website that we contribrute. We better go hunting for some to feature! :)

Hi Shirley - thanks for asking the membership! It seems to me that this is worth progressing, since it sounds like the initial outlay is minimal, if you're able to print "on demand". Just time and effort, I guess! If you're happy to lead this, then I'm sure others will help in whatever way they can. Let me know what you think.

I think we could use this year as an experiment for UK Butterflies merchandise - with all profits going to a good cause. I would assume it's also pretty straightforward to produce clothing (caps, T-shirts, Polo shirts, ...), mugs, mouse mats, whatever ... :)

Cheers,

- Pete

A great idea! Especially if you could produce gear with a small, tasteful logo rather than your average T-shirt, which is more logo than shirt!! Perhaps you could also consider sweat-shirts. Unusual colours would also be a plus - I'm sure there would be plenty of takers. Put me down for a dozen T-shirts, preferably with a high neck line as per RN.

HI All,

Lets go for it but I only do calendars, no tee shirts here or mugs!! I'll even do the calendars even if no one voted for me poor little small copper  I don't hold a grudge even if its me birthday.
Someone one high up will have to decide on the photos, 13 in all, do you want the species and name of photographer on the actual picture or on the back, I know a lot of people like the photos clear of writing so perhaps they can frame the picture when the month is finished, is it alright if the months start on a Monday.
I think Pete if you put the photos on a CD and send them to me and what the wording is on the front and the photo on the front to be a right stunner. I'll do a calendar and send it to you and please don't be afraid to point out mistakes or suggest any different idea, the photos and the wording can be changed any time.
I started doing these type of calendar three years and I dropped the biggest clanger of all times. I was so excited about the photos and I had friends who thought the photos were good, these were of sea views. I had a hundred printed and made then up and began to sell them, fantastic-- until someone said 'there is no 31st in January and then I realised the whole lot had been printed in the month of November, I'd forgotton to change the months only the pictures. All in the bin :(
I am more than happy for someone to point out a mistake so that it can be put right. The last bit is the price, someone make a suggestion please, its not for me to suggest. O.K. From Shirley

Hi
I think that we also need to consider payment methods aswell. As not everyone, including me, are able to pay over the internet using a card or paypal.

Happy Birthday Shirley.

My thoughts on the calender would be to use the winning comp entries starting at Gwenhyfar's September 07 pic.
That would give you plenty of time to prepare and print, and for us to buy them in time for Xmas.
However, I think that one photo per person is fair, so if one person won more than one comp, then second place should get that month unless they already have a photo in, and so it would go to third place etc,.
I think that it would be a nice touch to add the species and name of photographer underneath the photo.
I think that the front cover should be the UKB logo with a photo of Pete's Purple Emperor.
Just my thoughts.

Cheers
Denise

Happy Birthday!

That's you, that is :) Seriously - I like Denise's suggestion of picking the photo comp. winners and the approach for only having 1 entry per photographer.
Shirley Roulston wrote:I think Pete if you put the photos on a CD and send them to me
Sure - once we agree on the photos I can contact the photographers to get the high-res images.
Shirley Roulston wrote:until someone said 'there is no 31st in January
I think you'll find that there most certainly is!
Shirley Roulston wrote:The last bit is the price, someone make a suggestion please, its not for me to suggest
I think we need to find out comparative prices. I can look into this.

Cheers,

Thanks for the birthday greetings. Opps, I meant that I had missed the 31st in January in 2006. I like your idea's Denise on the photos. I'll go through the competitions from sep 07 till now and see what there is and a nice selection of butterflies and I think that that Pete's Purple Emperor on the front would be perfect. I'll go now and have lunch with my sister who has come over from Wrexham, then later go to the competitions and make a list. Bye Shirley
