Does anyone have any idea what this may be? Apart from a caterpillar, that is! It was found, feeding on Elm in Oct -07. It had a deeply bifurcate head, which gave the 'face' a heart-shaped appearance. Any ideas?

I have a much bigger and better picture, but the file size is too big for the web site. Perhaps I could email it to you?

This webpage
http://www.whatsthiscaterpillar.co.uk/plates.htm sorts caterpillars by foodplant... plate 7 shows the commoner species known to feed on Elm.... of which one is Mottled Beauty, and that seems to match your photo...

Hi Chris and thanks for that.
I have just looked MB up in the caterpillar book and it doesn't really match my photo. Also, I think that mine was a bit too big - boasting again! Ah, well - back to the drawing board.
