What are peoples' views on the accuracy of distribution maps in eg Collin's new guide?

I have just received my copy, and very good it is too, but I was struck by the differences that always appear between books for the distribution maps. A good example is for a species I see quite often in France (S. White Admiral) where I know full well that it is quite common in areas outside those shown.

Is there a "definitive" set of distribution maps I can refer too?

I've allways had the notion that the edges of ranges ebb and flow like the water's edge in a tidal estuary, only much slower...the book might have been right 20 years ago, and could be roght again in twenty years from now. The worrying thing in modern times is that there is a lot more ebbing than flowing
