It really is time I bought a decent editing programme.
I seem to only read about Photoshop, is this the one to buy?
I would be interested in other opinions good or bad before I commit .

Photoshop is brilliant, but very expensive (if you have to pay for it).
Personally I use Photoshop Elements 5, it does all I need as a keen amateur.
Google do a freebie called Picasa which I have never tried.
Microsoft also do Digital Image Editor 2006 which came bundled with my PC and is pretty good.

Have a look at Gimp, it is freeware and a clone of the most important aspects of Photoshop. I use it and Photoshop Elements 6 and I think between the two they cover just about everything that I would want to do, post processing wise. I also recommend FastStone, which is a picture viewer, but which also supports basic editing and Exif data viewing. My camera doesn't take RAW so it's possible that there are features that would be useful to a RAW user which aren't in the above software.

PS - I also recommend NeatImage which is a piece of software to reduce digital noise but it costs about £40.
