I wanted to go to Abbot's Wood i believe in East Sussex soon to see PBF. I have promised myself this visit for the last 2 years so this year I must make the effort. Has anyone been yet and are they flying. Also any help as far as where to look etc appreciated.

Hi Marc,
No sightings yet. This species has only just emerged down in the West and we are usually a little later than them. When they do emerge in force there should be no problem in locating them. A strong colony resulting from a remarkably successful re-introduction program. Will keep you posted.

I was at Bentley Wood (nr Salisbury, Wilts) on Saturday and there was no sign of them there. I'd give it a week if not more. Checking through the BW log book I found that last year (07) the first recorded PBF was 16/04 but in 2006 it was the 09/05. I think we're between the two this year....maybe

Went there last year (and plan to do the same this year). They are in quite a small part of the woods, but when you fiind the area there are plenty!

Not confidential at all, the Eastern Clearing is where you want for both PBF and SPBF. If you park in the main BW car park, walk back up the track you drove in on a short way (<100m), the clearing is on your left.

Hi Marc/all,
First PBF (singleton) out in Abbott's Wood (E. Sussex) yesterday. The numbers should build over the next few days with the predicted improvement in weather. A visit this coming weekend should time things nicely. The first PBFs (5) were also seen in Rewell Wood. Same timing applies for a really successful visit. See you on Tuesday Jack.

I think they should be around for a few weeks yet. Planning to get there myself this weekend. Don't recall the reserve itself being well signposted last year. I just printed a google map and followed that it was quite easy.

I went last Saturday in indifferent weather and there were good numbers in the Eastern Clearing, mostly towards its eastern end.

You might want to look at Alan Thornbury's excellent Hampshire butterflies website:

He has a site guide to the wood and in his blog also details a recent visit.

There were lots of Speckled Yellow moths and a singing Tree Pipit or two. I saw very few other butterflies - I didn't see Dukes or come across anyone else who'd seen them. As I said, there wasn't a lot of sun, though.

I know it's not in the area you're all at (except Wartoners) but there was 15+ Obliging, yet very fast PBF's at Gait barrows in Lancs on Sunday just been.
