WLH

Post by Paul »

Well... I've been out looking for WLH eggs this afternoon in Swaledale, all the usual haunts examined, but not a single egg identified. :( ... also Purple Hairstreaks just about as absent  it was such an awful year last year, I wonder whether populations have been really knocked back. last year they were really on almost every suitable elm/ oak! Has anyone else been looking, I'd be interested to know their findings.
Also, I know Holly Blues are subject to cyclical parasite destruction, wonder if this could be true of other Lycaenids??

Hi Paul,

I have looked and found nothing, but have not tried looking for eggs before - so am not sure if this is typical or not. Found a few larvae last spring.

Looking at the website for the national survey, there have been a fair few eggs found this winter, but also hints that the numbers are down after the poor summer.
