Major Milestone

Earlier today, the UK Butterflies website received its 1 millionth visitor!!!

Whoever that visitor was - congratulations. But it was quite possibly a search engine performing its indexing, or some spam robot trying to invade the site. But I'd like to think that a significant percentage of visitors are actually human beings :)

Thanks to you all for the level of interest you've shown in the website - and especially contributors. I can't believe this website started off with me just showing some photos. How it's changed since 2002!

Cheers,

- Pete

100000 visits is certainly some acheivement.
many of us have personal websites that have not had 1% of this success.

Excellent news and well done, I bet at the rate this site is growing in terms of visitors, quality, and users, it will be an even shorter time before the 2000000 visits are acheived.

Keep up the good work

Well, given your contribution Guy, you do deserve a prize don't you? :)

I didn't want to name specific contributors but, if I did, as the only other "Sys Admin" and "Mr ID", you'd be "right up there"!

I'd also like to thank Adrian Hoskins who provided many of the species descriptions (which I've yet to complete - still!).

As for everyone else - you know who you are. Which includes those who have kindly contributed their photos, those that take the time to respond on the forums, etc. etc. ... I thank you all!

Thanks for the avatar Charles :)

Cheers,

- Pete

Congrats Pete,

I think I speak for us all in saying thanks for this great site. I've learned so much already and am looking forward to the new butterfly season and the inevitable fantastic pics and banter.

I've been butterfly watching since I was 7 (in 1971) but it wasn't until the internet came along that I really met any other fanatics. I started putting my own photos up in 1999 (135356 unique visitors to date...) and was soon contacted by Tim Cowles and Matt Rowlings, with whom I have been on many fantastic trips in Switzerland and Spain. I've visited Roger Gibbons in the South of France and met Paul Kipling here in Switzerland, all because of the internet. Now, through UK Butterflies I feel I 'know' dozens more butterfly watchers and hope I will meet many of you in due course. Sites like this don't just inform and entertain - they bring together dissipated communities in a way quite unimaginable before. So on the occasion of our millionth visitor let me pour myself a pint of good English homebrew and drink to butterfly watchers everywhere!

Cheers!

And thanks, Pete,

Guy

A special day! One million hits!
From all and sundry (and some twits :) )
No more deserving, 'tis what I feels
For all the good work by Pete Eeles

Forego for now the 'wheres' and 'whys'
On this landmark for UK Butterflies
It surely is a fluttering feat
Our cheers go out to you, dear Pete!

Pete, a magnificent milestone! Very well done!
Guy, I shall probably be at The Eels Foot on Thursday night to see off a few real Adnams (Come to think of it, rather an appropriately named pub to celebrate Petes's success)

Yep - my brew is better than the local pissevache but can't hold a candle to the real thing!!! I'm jealous!

But you have changed my picture of the universe for ever, Alex. Henceforth it shall be the 'Eeles Foot'. :D
