Hi all,
spotted this in Devon last week - poor images due to it being high in a tree but think it's maybe a female silver washed fritillary?

Secondly - female speckled wood? Lovely green on wings

And finally, took this 2 months ago in hertfordshire - female meadow brown??

Hi Superfly, well done you've got all three species correct. However, the Silver Washed Fritillary is a male (see the horizontal black bars). I couldn't tell you if the Speckled Wood is a male or female.

Thanks Alexander - just wish it would have come down from the tree! Guess that's the challenge when taking butterfly pics on a small digital camera ;)

Wing shape is the strong clue. The Speckled Wood is a male. Females usually have much more rounded wings and are often larger.
