I thought this was a Brown Argus but at the reserve I saw it ,the manager said they have never been reported and was a female common blue?I still feel I am correct though?

This is definitely a Brown Argus. Take a look at the Similar Species section at:

http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/species. ... wn%20Argus

to see one clue - the missing dot on the underside of the forewing.

Cheers,

- Pete

Yes, there is no doubt about the identity. Pete's missing dot, the dark spot on the upperside forewing, the 'colon' mark on the underside hindwing and the chequering are all visible in this picture!

Brown arguses have massively increased their distribution, on the large scale and the small scale, in the last 10-15 years, and it is quite possible they have only recently arrived on this reserve.

PS - Unlike all my previous posts, this one actually comes from the UK, where I'm on holiday with my parents, so I'm not an impostor!! Hoping for some good Suffolk graylings this afternoon...

Thanks for the welcome, Bryan!

The Suffolk woods welcomed me too, today. Here's one on the original theme of this post:

A couple of graylings, knowing exactly where to sit to become invisible:

A lovely red admiral:

And the real reason I come home:

(the four-pint jug of Adnams, not my parents, though it's nice to see them too)

Thanks Alex - I shall certainly visit Minsmere and Dunwich Heath while I am here (I hope you had a pint or two of Adnams at the Eel's Foot when you visited - if not, come back soon).

Sorry Steve - but it's not uncommon for posts to go a little off-topic when Bryan H pops up with a poem or quip! :D

Gill and I stayed overnight B and B at the Eels Foot - had a superb evening meal (washed down with plenty of Adnams) and a first class breakfast. We found out that the pub does a folk/country music night each Thursday so we've booked to go back on 30th August!
