I fear we are going to have a reversal in this trend in a month or two...

So - over the winter - I was thinking that we shouldn't do photos taken during the month (there aren't many butterflies around in December!), but have a "theme" such as "behaviour" or "immature stages". Thoughts?

How about one species only, eg start with brimstone, and no pics that have been used before in a comp.

No disrespect to the winner but how did that win? I don't see the quality in that shot, more the opposite... maybe I'm blind, it must have had something cos lots of people voted for it.

Since I voted for it ... my reasons were:

1. It's different.

2. It's atmospheric (very!!!).

3. It's technical good (subject in focus, background blurred, subject off-centre etc.).

4. Nice contrast of colours.

Although, to be honest, I wish the colours on the subject stood out more.

Entries like yours and mine are what I'd describe as accomplished record shots, whereas TW's is something you'd be proud to hang on the wall in the front room.

I'm actually pleased that a picture that's not-about-the-butterfly won... this is a photography competition afterall and not a bug competition.

If you're interested in why some people are drawn to one kind of image and others are drawn to another, you could explore the psychometric testing of Myers-Briggs. From memory, it explains how some people tend to a certain behaviour in four categories: extrovert/introvert; intuition/sense; thinking/feeling; structured (organised)/spontaneous (disorganised).

I completed the test as part of a graduate scheme a few years ago. One of the tests for thinking/feeling is to look at a picture and write down what you see in 60 seconds. People that 'think' wrote things like: big ship, rough waters, grey sky, seagulls, 3 men on deck, torn sails, lightening, etc... people that 'feel' wrote things like: power, danger, death, anguish, sorrow, loss, atmosphere, etc...

So what I'm saying is don't be dismayed! TW's image clearly summoned all of the 'feelers' to vote by being so much more atmospheric than any other image... your challenge is to summon all of the 'thinkers' to vote by producing something extraordinarily interesting!
