Hesperiidae for the Needy

Standing in the corner of the skipper class (facing the wall :( ) I was thinking of how to redeem myself. I have turned to poetry.

Here's my poem, what I wrote

Hesperiidae for the needy

When I say small, I don't mean nippers
I'm talking here of family skippers
To be more proper, hesperiidae
Here's my guidance for the needy

Thymelicus, the problem genus
To frown and puzzle, does condemn us
And tell the difference does so vex
Between what's small and what's essex

The variations can be many
We're left to peer beneath antennae
And if you get this happy knack
You'll say essex if dipped in black

Do not fear if still in doubt
On UK Butterflies it costs you nowt
To consult Guy, or consult Pete
And even they might admit defeat!

So this is what sends me to pieces
To treat them both as different species
Please, no more essex, no more small
Let's call 'em common, one and all!

OK, a challenge.

Write a butterfly poem in true McGonagall style.

It must result in at least one groan per verse.

More groans, eh Jack?

Work in progress... 8)

Another MacGonagal fan?! For the uninitiated, William Topaz MacGonagal (1830 - 1902) was probably the world's worst poet. Had he written a poem called'Butterflies', it probably would have gone like this ...

Butterflies are wonderful things
Which have very pretty colours and patterns on their wings,
Of which they have four,
Which compared with birds is two more.

They fly in the summer time and like the weather to be hot
Which this year it is not
So perhaps when they see all this rain
They will all migrate and never be seen here again.

With apologies to the great man himself!! If you would like to see some of his work, go to http://www.mcgonagall-online.org.uk/poems

That's brilliant, Alex! If you're a fan, I hope I didn't offend by getting his name wrong in my first post.

Nice work, Alex!

Here's my response to Jackharr's challenge, although this probably owes more to Milligan than McGonagall!

Ode to Purple Emperor

Apatura, Apatura!
So high upon your oak
A purple sheen...
Where the sun is keen
Such wonders you invoke!

Apatura, Apatura!
Won't you come down where I am?
Chance rest upon my finger
For there a while to linger
'till you hear my shutter...SLAM!

Apatura, Apatura!
I once knew a girl like you
I've not forgotten yet,
She played so hard to get...
Her name was iris too!

Apatura, Apatura!
Imperious in flight
If salmon doesn't hoax you,
Then what the heck will coax you...
A lump of fresh dog-(pooh?)

Sorry! Couldn't make a rhyme at the end there!

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think, when I added these forums, that I might actually have a forum called "Poems" :)

Bryan and Alex - you both made me laugh out loud - which can be a bit embarassing when in a public place :)

We'll be onto Lepidoptera jokes next ... :)

Cheers,

- Pete
