The Butterflies of Great Britain & Ireland, Edited by Maitland Emmet & Heath., (Vol 7 Prt 1 of The Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain & Ireland) published by Harley Books, ISBN 0-946589-37-2.
Will give you all you need, and is the BEST butterfly book available
It is not a field/identification guide, although it has very detailed written descriptions.
It also details variations, distribution, detailed life history and behaviour, and identification description of all the life stages, and a very interesting history of the butterflies.
It also has a list of every (112!) species recorded in Britain & Ireland.
It is not cheap, but it is Essential.
It will answer most questions.
