Last Saturday Jeff and Sheila Howarth found two Ringlets at Rowley Lake, Burnley SD863326. Terry Lally was down there this morning and counted 32. As far as I know these are the first proven sightings of this species In the Burnley area.

Hi,
Not sure i you saw my post a few down from yours:

http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB2/v ... dc0546510a

But i found one at Brockholes quarry a couple weeks ago, and thought that this was surely out of it's range for Preston. they must be expanding across to the west side of Lancashire, which is great. Thanks for this post, it's nice to know other people have seen Ringlets as well as me in a new area.

Thanks,

Nick.

Hi Nick,
Thanks for the reply. It will be interesting to see if there are any more reports of Ringlets in Lancashire this summer.
Regards,
Bob.

Bob,

From the map reference you quote the ringlet site is some way from Rowley lake itself and nearer to Burnley. Is that right?

David,
Thanks for pointing out my mistake. I have now replaced It with the correct grid ref.

I saw a Ringlet today never seen one before, I take by the look of distribution maps this is unusual? Why are they not normally found in NW England when they are found in most areas all around the NW?

I believe the ringlet is one of those butterflies that is gradually expanding its range and may be on the point of moving into Lancashire. Here in Harrogate (which I would estimate is no more than 35-40 miles from Burnley as the crow flies - or should that be as the ringlet flies?) it is a common butterfly that I see in my garden every year.

This is because they have an aversion to Scousers.

Visited Rowley tonight and the Ringlets are there again this year in good numbers. We saw at least 6 plus 3 Meadow Brown, a Common Blue and an unidentified Skipper.
