Straights Incose and Goos Green, Alice Holt Forest

Post by Martin »

BryanH and myself had a great day today, bagging a list of 15 species, including Purple Emperor and Black Admiral!

Black Admiral
Purple Emperor (you know you've had a good day when PE comes second! )
Large Skipper
Small Skipper
Large White
Small White
Comma
Meadow Brown
Gatekeeper
Red Admiral
White Admiral
Silver-washed Fritillary
Ringlet
Marbled White
Holly Blue

We then popped in to Horsenden Hill on the way home and added 3 more to the list!

Essex Skipper
Green-veined White
Purple Hairstreak

So, 18 for the day, almost 1/3 of the British list! :D

Martin.

I believe it's an aberration, such as ab. nigrina. See:

Fantastic shots Martin - would it be OK to use these on the main species pages? If so, if you could email me (pete@ukbutterflies.co.uk) images 750 x 750 or greater, I'd appreciate it. Many thanks.

Peter,
You have my full permission to use anything I put, or have put in the past on UKB's for the good of the site. No problems with that at all.
These are 750 wide, but I'm waiting for Adobe to fix Photoshop for me, so I hope these will be OK...if not I'll get bigger ones to you as soon as I can.

Martin.

PS - waiting for PS to be fixed before I can do my Gallery too :(

Interesting. I photographed one of these last year in Kent and nobody I knew could say for sure it was an aberation of a White Admiral. I wasn't sure as both the upper side and underside were different to the normal white admiral.

This now clears up the mystery.

I thought what I saw was larger than the usual White Admiral though maybe it just seemd like that with the all black wings...

I am at work right now.

The photographs were really quite bad but I can try to find them and upload them when I'm at home. Might not be too bad on a computer screen.

Actually thinking back it was 2006 not last year.

Shot with sigma 70-300 while my 150 was away for repairs and so not much DOF and plenty of camera shake as it's not much cop on a monopod.
