Green-veined White - Favourite Photo of 2023

Week 7

Next week advent begins  and so as we hurtle on into the dark and cold winter :? hopefully these Favourite posts will offer up a bit of much needed cheer! :D

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Have a goodun

Green-veined White

This was taken during my annual, and increasingly unsuccessful trip to Bentley Wood for His Nibbs. It came out on top as my Fave selection as it is beautifully fresh, with the wings seemingly still bearing the creases from their folds. There is also an unusual mark on the middle of the margin of the hind wing – almost as if when putting the ‘green veins’ on the paint/ink ran.

I went to Monkton Nature reserve on the 27th of June and spotted this GVW on the blossom , my next GVW was in my own garden on the 26th of August,
I think they were few and far between this year, I saw more Small Whites this year and Red Admirals than the previous year,Goldie :D

Didn't see too many GVW this year. I was visiting a recommended Green Hairstreak site near Grantown early May without any luck but managed to see around a half a dozen GVW moving from flower to flower in an open field.

Best photos attached.

I generally struggle to get usable images with this species, but this year a beautifully marked and relatively docile female allowed close approaches on 19th April at Park Wood, just down the road from where I live:

The spring brood of Green-veined whites seemed a bit thin on the ground around my area this year but numbers were much better in the follow on summer brood.
Most of my photos were from the summer brood when some particularly well marked examples were seen.

A wonderfully posed male posing just outside Burpham at the end of a sunny early May day gets my vote as fav pic.
