Here's a bit different one. I'll probably change it, but for now it is better than all the pictures I took of Scolitantides orion.

I know I can't compete with the pros, but I was happy with this shot of Asian fritillary (Hypodryas intermedia wolfensbergeri) in a remote corner of the Alps. It was taken on 23rd June.

Yesterday I found a very friendly Silver-studded Blue at Silchester Common who was partial to a game of "Footsie".

Hi Colin
I bet it was the colour of your trainers that the blue was attracted to
unusual shot

good shot malcolm, which fen did you take this shot?, I've seen swallowtails at wood walton fen, but I suppose there are lots of other places in Norfolk to see them this time of year

Is there a Wood Walton Fen in Norfolk? The only one I know of by that name is in Cambridgeshire. I had understood that Swallowtails had not occurred at the Cambridge Wood Walton for over a century.

There's either another Wood Walton in Norfolk or else you must be very old Brian.

Swallowtail

Hi Brian

It was taken at How Hill, near Ludham. I've spent over 20 hrs this year trying to get a good shot of a Swallowtail (and that's not including all the driving!), so I'm really happy to have finally got this one. Conditions have been so cool and breezy I thought I might miss out. I've also tried Wheatfen and Hickling Broad and, given better conditions, both would be good sites - I saw swallowtails at both.

Best wishes and good luck to all

Malcolm

Would someone please remind us you we can tell the difference between Northern and "Southern" Brown Argus on the upperside?

The location Grass Wood is just about outside the range of both species and given the huge abundance of the "southern" Brown Argus this year I have to wonder.....
