Green-veined White - Favourite Photo of 2021

Week 7

Well we (some of us that is) made it to the Social without the latest strain in the Greek alphabet scuppering our plans and now as the nights get longer and longer we’ve only got the Favourites thread to keep us going! Still soon be 2022 and then the new season is just round the corner…

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Another quick reminder that it might be a good idea to select your Overall Favourite Butterfly Photo of 2021 now if you haven’t done so already so that you’ve got something to post when the series of threads culminates in 14 weeks time…

Didn’t see too many GVW in 2021. Managed to photograph a couple at Cambus in Clackmannanshire and Cambus o May on Deeside.

I saw quite a few Green Veined Whites this year in my garden, so I've decided to add more than one :D my excuse is a good one, I've very few of any thing else :D
The photos were taken between May and August Goldie :D

Though a frequently seen butterfly on my local patch, my most-remembered encounters came from a day in early May looking for Green Hairstreaks in the southern portion of Bedfont Lakes Country Park.

I am going to say that Green-veined whites had a below average year around my patch in 2021 although this may, at least in some part, be down to observer bias as there were times that I didn't go looking due to the dismal weather we were having. Having said that I certainly saw fewer in my garden this year and on the better days in the summer when there were lots of whites flying, most of them proved to be Small Whites rather than GVW.

My favourite shots were of Spring brood examples taken in my garden during May.

Green-veined White

This, my favourite shot, came from back in early May from Bentley Wood. I chose it because not only does it remind me of a cracking visit with Philzoid looking for Pearls but also because the image appealed to be. True not all of the butterfly is visible but I like the way that he’s so eagerly stuffing his face, oblivious to all around it. I also like the way that the hairs are standing up and in the same plane as the antennae.

My butterfly photography has been quite limited this year but I did have a small collection of Green0veined White photos to choose from. I selected this particularly colourful example, taken at my local Dry Sandford Pit reserve in April.

Decidedly poor year for these round my way. Saw far fewer than normal in spring and barely any during the later summer months.

This individual posing on bedstraw on 14th May was one of my few images:
