As the Richard Lewington pocket book for GB & I Butterflies is the one most recommended on this forum. Is there a similar one that you guys would recommend for birds. Thanks.

This is the one you need. The most comprehensive guide.

Agree with Andy02 that the Collins guide is the one most birders would say is the best guide. Possibly not the best for a beginner starting with just the UK as it would be rather overwhelming with so much info in there & species you won't see here.

I appreciate the quick response guys, but. This book appears to be a more "read at home" type. I was looking for the Lewington "pocket guide" type - assuming you rate any of them.

I am not a serious birder but I have this one which is small enough to carry around easily.

I have the Collins guide but also carry a Mitchell Beazly as a pocket guide (it’s proper pocket sized) and have found it excellent - not sure if it’s still published but available second hand https://www.worldofbooks.com/en-gb/book ... 5?keyword=

I use an app on my iPhone , it can be downloaded from the Apple App store, https://www.natureguides.com,  bird calls and songs are  also included, a great help for beginners to identify that elusive Warbler.
I also have Butterflies of Britain & Ireland, good for recording sightings erc.
