Identification please

Going through some old photos I discover attached. It was in The Dolomites Italy Aug 2nd

I think it would be a brave person to call certainty on that one ... :D I think my best bet is Melitaea diamina, false heath fritillary. Did you see false heath in the same area? Do you have any upperside photos - even very poor - that might help confirm the ID?

Thank you for that Guy. I post another only assuming its the same butterfly, its next in the photographic sequence and same/ similar plant, hope this helps with conformation. Its quite a long while ago so I can't really recall what was in the area. In fact looking at it the photo looks as though its been flipped for some reason it is definitely the same plant, like I said some time ago?!

Certainly looks like False Heath Fritillary from the upper-side.

Yes, that clinches it! You're right - if it's the same individual it's been flipped in one of the pictures, as the left wings are shredded in the first picture and the right wings in the second. But even if it's a different individual it's the same species.

Aaaaah great, many thanks for your help again.I think I must of flipped to ease ID when comparing, didn't help me much though it would appear!

Guy did all the hard work, identifying it from the upperside was easy :D
