Green insect

Post by millerd »

I know it's not lepidopterous, but I have never seen such a strikingly green beastie before. I haven't a clue what it is, unless it's some sort of wasp.

Can anyone help? Seen on Denbies Hillside on Sunday 17th.

I think it is a sawfly - possibly Rhogogaster viridis, though I believe there are several similar species, and I have no idea how to separate them!

Thank you Callum. I'd never considered a sawfly - they are a mystery area as far as I'm concerned except when finding a larva which has far more legs than a caterpillar ought to have... :) It's a striking beast, and viridis sums it up.

Thanks for the ID, Callum. Must confess, when Dave posted this I too had absolutely NO idea as to what it was.

There's always someone on here who can provide an answer. :)
