Week 19

Dennis the Menace I still battering us as we enter into the penultimate week the Favourites 2019. A heads up for next week…as well as Wood White there will also be the Vagrant and the overall Favourite thread.

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

I saw at least 4 'Black Admirals' at Bookham last year but only one settled long enough to get my camera on it I'm still looking for the perfect underside shot but I quite like this one.

Another species I didn't see in the UK in 2019, and they are quite uncommon in southern Europe so I never count my blessings with this one.

Thankfully, there were a handful around in the Italian Alps in mid-June:

The only White Admiral I saw last year was on the 17th of July in East Blean Woods , it was slightly damaged but I was pleased to see it. Goldie

This was possibly my first, if not my second White Admiral of the year which I found early in their season as Grovely Woods. It was my Favourite because it was one of those times when ‘Whispering’ seemed to work. I watched it scything its way along one side of the glade and I started whispering ‘come down, come down’. It got closer and closer veered upwards, flipped and then floated leaf like down right in front of me. Three shots later it was up and off again.

Almost all my sightings in 2019 were from my usual haunts of Chiddingfold and Bookham Commons. However, on a morning visit to Box Hill to try and catch the Dark Green Fritillaries before they became hypercharged, I came across this individual.A couple from Bookham......and a few from Chiddingfold. Worthwhile distractions from the main event at that time of year in both these locations...

I didn't see many White admirals in 2019 and managed to photograph even less. A visit to Oversley Wood produced the shot below of an individual showing some wear and tear and was the best I managed.

Must do better.
