Scotch Argus - Favourite Photo 2019

Week 14

The end of the Faves is now in sight so it might pay to start thinking about your overall Fave shot from 2019 (if you haven’t already done so). Not long now – possibly only 5/6 weeks until the hibernators start flying in earnest?

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Have a goodun

I had intended to try and see this species at Smardale Gill, following glowing reports in 2018, but on a day where the weather was a bit uncertain to the north, and time was a bit limited, I made my way to Arnside instead.

I hadn't seen Scotch Argus for a few years, and it appeared to me that numbers had dropped and that they were not as widespread across the Knott as I remembered. Nevertheless, I found several in two or three spots, in a variety of conditions from very worn to almost new.

I haven't been up there for a few years myself, Dave, so that's a worrying piece of news. By all accounts High Browns are in decline there as well.
