Ringlet - Favourite Photo 2019

Week 14

The end of the Faves is now in sight so it might pay to start thinking about your overall Fave shot from 2019 (if you haven’t already done so). Not long now – possibly only 5/6 weeks until the hibernators start flying in earnest?

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

This is another shot from my Niece’s wild garden in Somerset. I like the way in which the Ringlet’s dark colouring provides good camouflage, whereas the Gatekeeper in the background looks so much brighter. It’s a photo that needs a second look!

I didn't take many pictures of Ringlets last year. I did find a couple of mating pairs though. This pair had an unwelcome third wheel and in this image it looks like the female has resorted to playing dead in an effort to get rid of him!

After emergence, Ringlets quickly seem to become marked and I was pleased to find this pristine male spread out on a bramble leaf.

I didn't see many Ringlets that stayed put for a while But I was lucky enough to get an unusual one and one with open wings, the First one's a bit worse for wear I took the shots in Blean Woods on the 23rd and 24th July. Goldie

Only took the one image in the UK this year, which is a bit of a lamentable effort.

This was the first specimen of 2019 that I saw in the UK, at Old Castle Down, Ewenny, on 27 June:

Lots of Ringlets at some sites around my patch but less so at others and I didn't take many photos of this species during 2019.

Lovely image of the mating pair, Neil. Something not commonly seen in spite of how widespread and ubiquitous this species is in the southern half of the UK.

Ringlet

This was taken in Bentley Wood during the silly season. I chose it as my favourite despite the individuals’ battered and tired state because whenever I look at the image I have a sense that the butterfly is expressing two different sentiments and I can’t work out which one it is truly experiencing. The first is confusion/bewilderment as I can’t help feeling that it thinks that the decaying leaf is another Ringlet and can’t understand why it’s not responding. The second is a look of resignation – which I too was feeling at this pint having made three trips to Bentley for His Nibbs to be treated to only a handful of views as He soared majestically around the tree tops!

Though in many locations this species is very numerous during its shortish season, on my local patch I only ever see a handful. They tend to mingle with the Meadow Browns along the hedgelines beside the grassy areas, and I may possibly undercount them to some extent. It's also true to say that during their season I tend to be out at other sites and less on local walks. Nevertheless, here are a couple of those seen. Dave

Found an excellent Ringlet site ,about 5 minutes from home ,a site I usually visit to see the large colony of Common Spotted Orchids (and hybrids) that grow there ,some of these orchids appear to be Common Spot / Southern Marsh hybrids but until this season (meaning 19')
I,d never seen A Southern Marsh amongst the hoards of Common Spots ,but I finally found one single plant ,and also a single Bee orchid .
Anyway the single partially spotted AB; is from this site ,as is the pair and the worn AB;Arete is from a local Grizzle site.
