Large White - Favourite Photo 2019

Week 9

So with Advent done the next stage is the tree up…or at least in the building. So sit down in the glow of fairy lights and think about the next set of Favourites.

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

I came across this female whilst I was walking in my local woods on a lightly overcast day in July. With her heavy and floppy flight it was clear that she was a recent emergent and she soon settled to harden her wings and allow me to approach.

Two shots for me ,probably the only two Large White shots that I took this year ,the caterpillar was taken in the vegetable patch at Batemans (Rudyard Kiplings gaff ) in East Sussex ,and the other on that excellent Autumn source of nectar ,Devils -bit Scabious in Orlestone forest. Kent. Allan.W.

I agree, not many Large Whites seen last season, even on the coast.

My contribution is an image of one of the pupae I was monitoring over the winter of 2018/2019 on the Sussex coast which produced a butterfly on 6th May.

Gardeners will be delighted, but for we butterfly enthusiasts this species was worryingly scarce in 2019. I reckon I barely got to 3 dozen (they were even scarce on the continent) :(

Here's my first of the year, on 7 April:

I also found this female ovipositing at the National Botanic Gardens of Wales on 24 September:

Large White

This was taken on the last day of May. I’d spent the morning in between the showers at Bentley Wood with Philzoid and several Small Pearls. I headed home for lunch and my wife suggested a walk through Garston Wood so we grabbed our cameras and set off. There weren’t that many butterflies around despite the sowers clearing and the weather improving but ironically when we were through the butterfly enclosure things started to pick up on the Lepidopteran front the highlight of which was this male Large White. I chose this shot as it reminded me that I actually really like this species. To me there’s something visually pleasing about the tidy and clean two tone male and the shear boldness of a white palette I find striking.

As others have mentioned, not a common sight in 2019. However, there were enough around in Yorkshire to massacre my sister's nasturtiums, and I managed a series of shots of an ovipositing female under a leaf of that plant.

I didn't take many photos of Large Whites this year, mainly because there were not that many about.

A first brood male from my garden in early May, one of the first I saw.

There were more around in the summer brood but of the three common whites they were the least numerous. I spotted the one below taking shelter during a summer shower.
