Brown Argus - Favourite Photo of 2019

Week 2

Here we go for round two – it seems like only last week that I started this years’ Favourite thread – where does the time go eh?

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Have a goodun

My local patch has been blessed with good numbers of this species this year, with an unprecedented peak of 40 individuals counted on 30th May in the first brood. The second brood were cut short somewhat by untimely mowing at the end of July, but had still put up a reasonable show just ahead of this with 32 on the 23rd of that month. The appearance of a handful of fresh individuals towards the end of September probably represented a third emergence, but unusually none was seen in October this year. I took a lot of photos, but the one that still sticks in the memory was this backlit shot from quite late in the afternoon on a mostly cloudy and cool (only 13 degrees maximum) 5th May.

Having never seen paired Brown Argus before ,I set out this season to try and rectify the situation ,and after several false starts
( numerous Common Blue pairs ) I found two pairs on the same trip to Dungeness …………………...Well pleased !

This species emerged surprisingly early round my way this year, with the first seen on 18th April. Three days later, on Easter Sunday, this beautiful, fresh male landed by me:

A couple of favourites from me.

This one from a trip down to Aston Rowant in late July,
Brown Argus - Aston Rowant 29.07.2019

And a first brood from one of my local spots in early June which was a favourite because it was the first time I had found this species there.

Brown Argus

This was taken in Bokerley Dyke at Martin Down in mid June. As well as being my first for 2019 it easily became my favourite because I love the colour and the way the light plays off of the scales on the fore wings turning a chocolate brown butterfly into an inky blue/black/brown butterfly.

I managed to catch the very start of the Brown Argus flight season at Fordon Chalk Banks on 28th April, with several gorgeous, fresh, chocolate-brown individuals.
