Brown

Post by Dave P »

Photographed what I thought was an Oriental Meadow Brown, group consensus was aberrant specimen but processing photos at home I have two identical specimens in one frame. Location is Mount Chelmos area in Greece and I am unable to get any Maniola sp. to fit, either by markings or distribution. Any suggestions gratefully received. Plenty of normal Oriental Meadow Browns observed during our stay.

I don't think the rear wings are scalloped enough to be Oriental Meadow Browns. When I was in Corfu a couple of years ago the Meadow Browns were very variable. Some had markings just like yours, while others had hardly any signs of ocelli on the underside.

Hi Nick - reckon you are right, was hopeful it was Maniola sp. as there were two identical specimens. Many thanks for your reply
