Yesterday (9th May) whilst out on Fairwood Common on the Gower, I came across these bee-like insects on some cow dung.

Does anyone know what they are?

They're Yellow Dung Flies ( Scathophaga stercoraria ) David.

Quite attractive little critters, even if their favoured haunt is decidedly unpleasant!
