Can anyone help with these 2 moths?.Taken in July in Northumbria Jim

Hello Jim,
I think your top moth is a shoulder striped Wainscot , the other is a bit baffling . I thought at first that it was probably a "Red Underwing " species
(Catacala ) ,but the species that occur in the Uk all have a second smaller black bar on the hindwings ,which yours doesn't , then I thought of an abberant Tiger ……..but not that either. This may sound daft ,but shape wise it ticks all the boxes (for me anyway ) of Large yellow underwing .
Going back to the Red underwings ,the small band below the lower hindwing black band ,is generally white /grey yours is clearly orange /red.
Sorry I can,t be more help . Be interested to see if anyone else has any ideas .

Having looked again ,I,m more convinced that it is a Large Yellow underwing .the forewings do appear very dark as well ,but as you know it is a very variable species ,can only think that it is a very fresh ,dark individual.

I think your first image is a Smoky Wainscot - the markings are not strong enough for Shoulder-striped as Allan suggested. However I agree with him that the second image is definitely Large Yellow Underwing. I think the backlighting from the window has made the underwings appear more reddish than perhaps they were? I often see individuals of this dark, black pattern with a 'flame shoulder' in Yorkshire.
