I de-snared a Red Admiral from an old cobweb today. Hopefully it won't find another.

Also, a moth was attracted to my torchlight as I walked home along a very lonely, very muddy woodland path. It was a lovely little thing, about the size of a Purple Hairstreak. It held its wings closed in quite an unusual way for a moth. I think it may have been a Winter Moth, but you won't be able to tell from the attached photo, which might struggle for a place in the photo competition ;-)

I have to say that the photos in this year's comp are top notch. Some real corkers there.

Coming home in the pitch dark through that same woodland path last Wednesday after an hour's overtime, I turned a corner to apparently see in my torchlight among all the shadows, a hooded body hanging from a tree. As I got closer I could see that some joker had hung up a hooded cloak, like you might see in a Harry Potter film from a branch of a tree crossing the path ! It's in those sort of moments you realise adrenaline is brown.

29th November.

Two Red Admirals enjoying the sunshine here today, nectaring on the 'still' flowering Choisya.

Some unexpected sunshine locally at lunchtime today (30th), but like Monday it was not enough to conjure any adult butterflies, not even a Red Admiral. However, in the absence of frost (so far...), that species' caterpillars are still appearing in the nettlebed "nursery".

On the cusp of December, it does seem remarkable that this local oak tree still has the majority of its leaves (a few of which even remain green).
