What event played a large part in causing the original name of the Pearl-Bordered Fritillary to be changed?

You really dipped out there, Gruditch. It'll probably never, ever happen again. Oh well.

Clue...
It was the same event which means that the term "May Ball" in the Cambridge University Colleges is now not often an accurate description.

That would be the change from the Julian to Gregorian calendars, so that 'April fritillary' became inappropriate (though it does apparently emerge in April nowadays).

This is also the reason why Russians can fly to London and shop in the January sales for their Christmas presents!!

PBF, used to be called April Fritillary, but I can't find an event that changed this.....yet.

You wait an hour for a bus and then two turn up within the same minute...
Yes Guy. The Pearl-Bordered Fritillary was called the April Fritillary back in the early 1700's, but in September 1752 the Gregorian calendar was adopted in Britain (that year, the date actually went from Wednesday 2nd September to Thursday 14th September literally overnight!). Those missing days led (amongst other things) to the realisation that the butterfly rarely hatched out in April anymore, so the name was deemed no longer accurate.
NB: Many University May balls are still held in "May Week", which is now two weeks into June

Over to you Guy.

7 minutes, eh?! I wrote a much more difficult crossword clue, then decided to do the ASCII instead for something different. I'll have to use that crossword clue next time!!

Well done, Pete,

Well done Felix.

Pete, That looks nothing like the pupa image on the DoB index page. :(
Perhaps you should add it.
