Voting Mechanism
Re: Voting Mechanism
So with the comp over, do we start rating the entries now? (as an unofficial try out of the new system)
I am guilty of jumping the gun a bit Sorry.

Re: Voting Mechanism
We can't quite do that since the current albums aren't set up as competitions. So I've created a "Test Competition" album at:
http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB2/g ... um_id=1718
which we can use to test the new mechanism. I've added 10 random images of my own in there (of course, a member will be restricted to a single photo in the real comps!). The significant dates are:
Members can upload an image until the end of 22nd September
Members can rate until the end of 25th September
The competition closes at midnight on 25th September - so we should be able to see the results next Saturday morning
Cheers,
- Pete

Re: Voting Mechanism
It’s a bit difficult to vote in a meaningful way with that selection. But I suppose you might be able to draw some conclusions from a series of zeroes or ones

Why? Seems representative of a typical set of comp. images doesn't it?jackharr wrote:It’s a bit difficult to vote in a meaningful way with that selection

Re: Voting Mechanism
Are you able to see how people actually vote Pete? If you could, you would notice that I didn’t give you a single zero (or indeed a one) as I had jokingly threatened. That was my twisted sense of humour but I guess it didn’t quite come across like that.
One picture particularly intrigued me. The home-reared Camberwell Beauty larva is dated 25 August. I well understand that rearing often results in early emergences, delayed emergences, second broods, etc, but that late date does strike me a little odd. So how did it come about that it was still a larva at the end of August?

All votes are "hidden". But at least I now understand your jokejackharr wrote:Are you able to see how people actually vote Pete? I obtained the livestock from a breeder and they often induce multiple broods by providing a "false winter" artificially. I don't know if that was the case here.jackharr wrote:The home-reared Camberwell Beauty larva is dated 25 August. Re: Voting Mechanism
So Pete,
Am I right in thinking you now need as many UKButts members as possible to rate the 10 photos in the "test" competition before the end of play tomorrow (25th) to make the results meaningful. We know we can be critical in this instance without upsetting anyone, as you provided all the photos

The purpose of the exercise is to allow interested members to get a feel for how to enter and vote, and provide feedback on the way the results are presented. It's as simple as that. As long as (say) 2 people vote, I think we'll get a sense of how the new mechanism can work.

Re: Voting Mechanism
Thanks Pete,
Well there's at least two now, 'cos I've added my ratings to those already done by Gary.

Re: Voting Mechanism
I bet there are a plenty more than that. I think I like the new rating system, but the actual mechanism is a bit cumbersome - too many clicks and too much waiting.
Re: Voting Mechanism
Am i lost in the wilderness here again. Do we have to rate every image? I rated just the one.
Cheers,,, Zonda.
Re: Voting Mechanism
You can rate as many or as few as you want Zonda.

Re: Voting Mechanism
I gave ratings to all ten pictures. As I understand things, had I scored only say nine of them, the tenth (one in my opinion not worth bothering with) would have by default been given a zero.

Re: Voting Mechanism
I'm going to be doing the same Jack.
No more nil points for anyone in the comps. Everyone deserves a couple of points at least for trying.

Re: Voting Mechanism
With the old voting system, to find my top 3, I used to go though all the entries and give them points out of 10, I never gave a zero. I would then vote for my 3 highest scoring.

Well i just choose a winner, and rate the work. Who comes third or last don't interest me.

Zonda:

I wouldn’t go quite as far as that. But I certainly wouldn’t be in the least interested in places after third. Why should I get excited, for example, about getting 26th place? Indeed, I’d rather not know just how few votes I got if I was outside the first three.Who comes third or last don't interest me.

Re: Voting Mechanism
Anonymity is important I feel as there is always a slight temptation to vote for the person rather than the image.
