Or you could save up for ages and get one of these:

With a 1.4x Canon TC it'd wipe the floor with the Bigma, but it IS three times the price.

hmm...that one would be a great choice if I had a lot of money to spend, but being a student, kinda negates that, still holding out for the last minute to see if I can get bigma.

I lost the bigma at the last minute, I could have had it for 460, but my computer decided to mess up 10 seconds before the end of the bid, dang!

Since I could not get the bigma, anyone know how the Canon EF 100-300mm L f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens is?

Ok, ooch, thats ancient. I read your earlier post, so the Sigma
120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM would be a good lens for birds then? I was thinking of this because i could not get the bigma

Sadly Dave I don't think it will, I thought it was a replacement for the discontinued 80-400 EX OS, ( that never relay did very well ). But I noticed that the 120-400 is not a EX so crap glass.

I don't know where Sigma are going with their EX lenses. I'd heard that their line is that the EX designation will be reserved in future for prime focal length lenses. However, they are still producing the Bigma, the 100-300 F4 and a few other zooms which continue to carry the EX label. I have the 100-300 F4 which is reputed to be one of the best zooms Sigma has ever produced, and I can quite believe it. It is very, very sharp. With a 1.4x teleconverter, it gives a respectable 140-420mm/f5.6 maintaining AF and still producing sharp images wide open, but it's expensive. Doing a bit of digging around it seems the 120-400 isn't anything to write home about optically, so Gary is probably right. The Tamron 200-500 might be an alternative for the Bigma.
