Lovely to see Speckled Wood and Red Admiral enjoying the sun in my back garden testerday

The same two species, red admiral and speckled wood were at the AWT reserve at Willsbridge today. Two of the three RAs seen looked very fresh. Also two mating pairs of common darters.

In the gardens at the grounds of Chichester Cathedral today there were Peacocks, Red Admiral, Speckled Wood and Large White enjoying the sunshine. Also I spotted something orange flying at a distance which looked remarkably like a Brown Hairstreak but it could have been just about anything really, possibly a disturbed moth.

I suspect your orange butterfly/moth was a moth called the Vapourer. The male can look very Brown
Hairstreak like in flight, especially as their flight periods overlap. It also flies by day. October is a little
late for the Vapourer (generally ends late September) but the warm weather this week is certainly allowing a few things to fly. I hope I am wrong and it was a Brown Hairstreak, but that would be a really late record.Nice to see you are still seeing late butterflies. We saw a number of Peacocks and Red Admirals on the wing yesterday at Dungeness(and a Vapourer last weekend).

Thanks, Dave, that would certainly tie in and make far more sense than a brown hairstreak!

I have seen Vapourer male moths and their "punk" caterpillars but never in flight before.

Red Admirals were frequently seen over the town and outskirts of Shoreham including Mill Hill, running at about eight an hour. Large Whites were less at about five an hour. A midday visit to the lower slopes of Mill Hill was leisurely. There were hardly any butterflies, just one plain brown Common Blue female, one Small Copper that appeared after five minutes and a few Meadow Browns.



A Comma Butterfly settled on the wooden rail in the Butterfly Copse next to the Waterworks Road.

I have had a lonesome Small Tortoiseshell in my garden for the last few days. It looks in good condition so not sure where it has come from. I still have a large clump of full flowering marigolds so I think that was the attraction.
I have got my camera back today (lent it to my daughter for pics of my new grandaughter ) so hopefully it may appear tomorrow although we are forcast a very cold night
I want summer back and I want it now!!

No butterflies around here at moment (as far as I can see) Its supposed to be dry on friday here, so I want to get out early and see whats about, maybe see if there is one last chance to find speckled woods here as I know they stop flying soon.

Every time the sun comes out the Red Admiral(s) is on the vebena bonariensis.

Maybe the last Red Admiral of the season.

I spent about three hours out and about yesterday and despite a glorious afternoon I just saw a few common darter males. It's been dull, cold and dreary today and I saw no leps or ods.

Weather forecast not looking too good for butterflies in the UK next week...

Just a few red admirals cruising around rather hopelessly up here in my mountain - hopelessly, because the altitude ones never survive the winter.

This is what October looked like on my dog walk this evening. That isn't water - it's cloud. Sometimes it splashes around the mountains looking just like the sea and everyone above it has a glorious day while those below are shrouded in gloom. I move on Tuesday, 250m further down the mountain.

During a brief sunny spell today, I saw one Red Admiral and one Comma, no whites for the first time though.

I think to-day weather will put paid to seeing anymore butterflies, wintery showers, bitterly cold and this rainbow was waiting for me as I open the door.
