The lady spreading its wings is a male. A rare capture that, Jack.

I'm a little confused why you thought that I implied that the one with wings open was a female? Maybe my "caption" was confusing. I knew of course that the female is on the left.

Saw one female holly blue laying eggs on ivy along this old wall about a few hundred yards from my house. Do HBs lay on ivy this time of year? I thought it was Holly? Or is that spring gen I am thinking of? I got a pic I'll post soon

It's Ivy at this time of year, Dave. In fact, it's worth monitoring any ivy flowerbuds over the next few weeks for signs of larval activity!

Cheers,

30 August. First example of new brood Small Tortoiseshell, South Cambridgeshire.

Beautiful weather here. Here's hoping for similar conditions for the butterfly party here three weeks today.

The past few weeks have seen an improvement here: 3 Small Tortoiseshells, 2 Peacocks and a Red Admiral not much but I was begining to think I wouldn't see any, still no Painted Ladies however.
