the butterfly had dived straight into my wineglass; my rescue attempts were not successful :(
At least it died happy.

Looks like a Geranium Bronze if I'm not mistaken.

Jack Harrison wrote:A few years ago I posted a deliberately awful picture in the monthly competition. It was a Large White, badly out of focus and horrendously over-exposed.
One person gave the feedback that I had hoped for: advice on adjusting exposure for white butterflies, how to get crisp focus and so on :)
Jack
Do you think that you could re-post that advice otherwise I'll bombard you with pictures of white blurs that might be butterflies or snow flakes.

This is not from 2013, in fact 2011, but its one of those silly photos that should be scrubbed out but I love the shadow. Many Wall Brown photos result in a blurred image as the butterfly is so super sensitive and often flies as the shutter goes off. Maybe one day it will be in the bin!!

This was my best picture of a Julia Heliconian taken on my holiday to St Lucia! It's behind the top bit of Lantana in the middle of the picture. I saw loads of them, but they never stopped flying!

Well Nick, I have to take your word for it that there IS a butterfly in that photo.

I think we need an arrow on that one!

Even with my nose pressed up against the monitor I can't spot anything, it's fun trying though could we have a larger photo perhaps? :D

I might be wrong, but it leapt out at me as soon as I looked at this picture! :D It's below and to the left of the pink flowers right of centre, nectaring on the yellow flowers ...

I think I can see the object you're referring to, Guy, but you must have eyes like a Peregrine to conclude that this is a butterfly!

With eye sight like that Guy I think we need you on our spring and autumn sea watches at Dungeness. You would be able to see and identify birds passing on the French side of the English channel. :) (They appear to get a lot more birds than we do).

We must have been looking for something obscure and missed the obvious. Selective blindness.

^^ Ha ha!! ^^
Well done Guy. I don't know how you spotted that. You are spot on! Even at full size it isn't obvious, but as it's my only picture of a Julia Heliconian I am not deleting it from my computer!!

I am great at taking rubbish pictures (It's good to be good at something!!) Here is the only picture I managed of a Canary Brimstone:

And here's one to test Guy. The only picture I got of a Canary Grayling. It was right next to the path until I disturbed it and it took off into the trees the other side of a small gorge!

Here is a real rarity - a British-bred Marbled Fritillary, photographed in Buckinghamshire in 2010. The only photo I have as the hyperactive adults charged up and down the main ride of the wood and did not settle on any other occasion. A good butterfly day though as His Majesty circled round my head and later attacked a pair of fighting Speckled Woods.
