I was very pleased to receive this award from Pete and the gang, particularly as it came with a print of Long-tailed Blues by Richard Lewington. Every time I glance up from my computer screen it brings back happy memories of summer/autumn 2013 ... it didn't take me long to hang!

Hi Neil, just to add my congratulations to those already posted. The award really couldn't have a more worthy recipient. I'm always pleased when I meet you in the field because (a) you'll probably have a Purple Emperor sniffing round your trousers (b) I always learn something new!

There is not much more I can add really. His tireless work for conservation, his enthusiasm for butterflies, his infectious manner that just makes you get out and look at nature, means that there is no one better than Neil to receive this award. To cap it all, when you meet him, he is a really nice person.

Thanks John, Jack and Dave, and additional thanks to John for taking the family pic. It's not difficult to see which one of us is happiest at being in an Emperor wood! I seem to remember that my usually well-behaved daughter screamed so loud that even the squirrels left the wood for the rest of the afternoon.

One question. How many butterflies can young Mia name?

My younger daughter one early summer's afternoon when in her pushchair a similar age drove us all mad by shouting "Chiff Chaff" non-stop for about half an hour.
And then there was a (pilot) friend many years ago who had a very young son who could name just about any aircraft that had ever flown. At the time, I flew C130 Hercules. Young Jamie had been carefully primed that every time he saw "Uncle Jack" he would say: "Hercules. Yuck!"

Maybe next May, Mia could be "trained" to say something like "I saw five Dukes yesterday" just to p*ss off others
