It's going to be a long night writing these reports, and a little longer now because I've just jotted down a connecting wall of British butterflies. For those who don't watch Only Connect, the idea is to divide these 16 butterflies into four groups of four connected butterflies - you have to find the groups and the connections.

There's nothing especially obscure here - no mythology or Latin roots or anything - but I hope it gives a little pause for thought for those who've finished Roger's and Nick's questions. Nor is there anything especially festive, except, as I said, I always find Victoria Coren a little festive! :D

I am not sure I have this right, but at least one line is certain.
I like these, and shall try to put some together over the next few days.

Rare Vagrants to UK from Mainland Europe
Camberwell Beauty, Long-tailed Blue, Queen of Spain, Pale Clouded Yellow

Larval foodplant Prunus sp
Black Hairstreak, Brown Hairstreak, Black-veined White, Scarce Swallowtail

Successful overwintering adults in UK
Brimstone, Comma, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock

Different names for same butterfly
Monarch, Milkweed, Wanderer, Black-veined Brown

I share your enthusiasm for the delicious Victoria Coren. She is intelligent, gorgeous, witty, and (this is a real plus point for me) a very accomplished Poker player.
I would love to take her on!
Her father Alan Coren was often cited as being the most witty man in Britain, and I still remember his brilliant contributions to the News Quiz on Radio 4. I have some collections of short stories by him hidden away somewhere that I must dig out again.

Congratulations! You solved the wall!

You get 4 points for the correct lines, 4 points for the connections and a bonus 2 for getting it all right!

I look forward to your walls.

All this intellectual activity is making me feel that it's time to hibernate. I shall crawl into my tortoiseshell.

Indeed! I am lucky to have Samantha with me now, giving me a hand, whilst I look for clues!
She says she's looking forward to going out with me on a bike-ride later.
She loves to sit on my cross-bar and ring my bell at the end....

What was that about intellectual activity, Mike?

Samantha has got to go off early to meet an entomologist friend who's been showing her his collection of winged insects. They've already covered his bees and wasps and tonight she's hoping to go through his flies.
