One sees. :D Yup! It must have been me Pete, i put 4 into the right place and tried to put the last one into the locked album. I have just repeated the process, and it's fine. If you do this by mistake, you do lose the image. I had to re-upload it. Cheers. :D

Pete, I think I must have messed up. I have uploaded a Large Tort. photo to the species specific albums. The thumbnail appears in the right place, but if I click on Large Tort. my image appears below the albums, and not in an album. Be patient with me; I'm a bit of a duffer with computers.

No worries - I've just moved it.

In theory, the "moderate" option below the image should allow you to move it to the correct place (which is what I just did) - but I'm not sure if that is available currently :(

Cheers,

- Pete

Thanks. But I'm still not clear what I should have done in the first place to get it into the correct album.

Ah!

Each species album contains a number of sub-albums - one for imago, ovum, larva and pupa (as a minimum). You placed your photo in the "Large Tortoiseshell" album and not the "Imago" album inside the Large Tortoiseshell album - if that makes sense! The full structure of the species-specific albums can be found at: http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/gallery_guidelines.php

- Pete

What's a Fiery Skipper in the list of species for the species specific albums?

The list of species are those given in "The Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland" by Emmet and Heath. It's the same list of species given on the UKB homepage.

Pete, I notice that for the Apollo in the species specific albums you list just two of the countless named sub-species. Do I take it that you do not want anything from the Pyrenees?

The albums are for butterflies on the British list. In the unlikely event of a butterfly of this ilk turning up on these shores I'm sure that we can add the relevant subspecies to the album.

In fact, we should really just have the type listed in the species specific album as per Bradley (2000)

Good question - if you just place the photos in the "root" album for now (i.e. the one named "Apollo") then we can also ensure that this is also used (if that makes sense!).

Thanks to everyone for their contributions so far.

I figure that the easiest way to get data and site information is for these to be included in the image name if possible (which is what most of you have done) - this can then be used when visitors "hover" over the image.

So - if folks could please use this convention from now on I'd appreciate it.

Cheers,

- Pete

More nit-picking, I'm afraid. I was about to upload a couple of Small Copper images into the species-specific album, but I found I was confronted with a choice between two alleged sub-species. Ssp "eleus" sounds suspiciously like the form elea from the Balkans, of which I have uploaded a rather extreme example into my overseas sub-album. This doesn't seem appropriate for southern English Small Coppers.

Hi Misha,

Lycaena phlaeas eleus is the small copper you will encounter in England Scotland and Wales. L.p.hibernica is the small copper you will encounter in Ireland. Hence their inclusion to the species pages. Bradley Number 1561.

...allegedly.

Too many piffling, not to say bogus sub-species IMHO!

I couldn't agree with you more Misha,

I had a rant about the meaningless British silver studded blue species level splits in an earlier post somewhere, and in Europe they seem to be splitting like there's no tomorrow. Still, it keeps the taxonomists gainfully employed I suppose.

Interesting that you mentioned the small copper though. If you read any literature the same phrase is always regurgitated declaring the "nominate species is not present in the UK". I wonder when anyone last checked..? :D

You think thats bad, check this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Heath its all the subspecies of Large Heath in the USA, some have even been given common names like "Common Ringlets"

While we are on subspecies, which I like studying, anyone know if the subspecis Hibernica of Orange-Tip is present on Isle of Man? I think its been said that it is but never confirmed or something

hmm, with people breeding and sometimes releasing species that they should not be, could be possible its back, but I am only 100% fimilar with Irish subspecies to butterflies as I know the difference in them and the ones found in rest of UK, except grayling as I have only seen it once.

In my defence - I'm using the taxonomy given in Emmet and Heath, and also Riley, and these are consistent :)

If anything, some subspecies should be marked as "extinct"!

To add my two pence worth.
I think that logging the butterflies in the manner, will give the most comprehensive collection of species, sub-species and aberrations of UK butterflies to be found anywhere on the net.
Good for you Pete. :)
(It can be a pain in the rump when you are uploading though)

(Am I allowed to say rump? )

I've been "mocking up" the new species pages, with all images pulled in from the contributions being made, and it looks really good! The "switchover" will take a while, though, since I need to get some of the "unusual" photos currently on the main species pages into the new gallery!

Cheers,
