I'm sure you'll get one this year Zonda, at least they hibernate so you have a good chance! The weather this week is going to be hot and sunny too.

Nick, that picture of the Red Admiral and the bee is a cracker.

Cheers

Hi all,
On Saturday I saw another 5 female Brown Hairstreaks at Steyning, split between the Rifle Range and Round Hill. Numbers are definitely on the wane now and the high winds and heavy rains of last week will have taken their toll. Bearing in mind that this species is increasingly difficult to see at Noar Hill (blackthorn 'management' - oops! ), and I reckon that Steyning is the best site to see them in the UK (I've seen 40 females at low level here this year), I'll organise a get-together for UKB members next season. This will be in mid/late August - critically timed to get the weather right and ensure success.

You do know I'm in the Canon club don't you??

It seems I was a tad premature in my statement of season cessation at Greenford Park Cemetery earlier. Seen yesterday:
Small Copper x 3
Common Blue male x 1
Holly Blue x 1
Speckled Wood x 3
Large White x 11
Small White x 2

Plus a Speckled Wood and Green Veined White in my garden.

I'm off to Somerset on Friday for a week (lots of Speckled Woods, Commas and Peacocks this time last year) so hope the weather holds...

Cheers

Hi Neil,

Is Steyning on the A283? I would certainly like to come along if you do!

Cheers

Hi Lee,
I'll post detailed directions as the time approaches, but yes, it's on the A238.

Nothing around here but whites. I might do a trip to Steyning tomorrow to get my brown hairstreak fix before it's too late!

Plenty of feeding on the buddleia today (2nd flowering) - painted ladies, peacocks, small whites and lots of small tortoiseshells.

Did you cut down, or dead head your Buddleia after the first flowering? I'm a novice at Buddleia management. :D

I'd love to go too! My mission for next year to get a decent shot of a BH. It's a great idea.

  That wasn't my intention.
Just look in any sunny sheltered spot. That one was on my washing line post, but they usually appear either on or near the plum trees, Willow or blackberry.
I'm sure that you'll get one.

Thanks for your comments Lee, Zonda...as Denise says, once you get to know your local patch, you can start to predict where you might see what. I have a sheltered corner in the Cemetery where the morning light falls, plus a few patches of ivy, where I know I will see something, if it is about. (All I have to do is open my crypt  (sorry, door!) and walk out...)
