Same story here in CH - a poor spring for red admirals, after the hardest winter in living memory. But I saw at least four today, mostly looking rather fresh, so I wonder if numbers are going to pick up now. Conditions have been perfect for red admirals and small tortoiseshells this year, in terms of breeding.

I saw one yesterday near Painswick Beacon in Gloucester. Seems a good year for painted laides and even saw a Marbled white.

At last! I finally saw my first Red Admiral of the year flying through our garden about 15 mins ago :D . It is 54 days later than my first of last year :? !
Thanks again to you all for your comments and reports!
Best wishes
Deano.

Deano, just for you:

Was greeted by this little fellow as I walked in my front gate tonight!

He looks like he's survived a bird attack. Even the thorax has a chunk out of it. He was a bit dopey and even climed on my hand (to drink some sweat I guess, boy was it hot!), so I placed him on my neighbour's buddliea bush after his photo session and he perked up a bit.

That is interesting. The answer is: "they are all in our garden in Llandudno"! This is our 12th summer here and we have record numbers this year.

Anybody else from North Wales seen more Red Admirals than usual? Any theories as to why they are thriving here?

We have quite a few on our Buddelia in Nefyn and along the lanes, saw 3 yesterday. Have you been up to the orme to see the Silver-studded blue, there's a small amount of these special butterflies up there that are called the 'orme race'. One of those would make a fantastic photo :)
