A walk around my local area today produced

9+ Red Admirals
1 Peacock
2 Speckled Woods
2 Commas
and a flock of 40+ Fieldfares

On my return home I found a Small Tortoiseshell basking on my window and a further 5 Speckled Woods and a Small White in the garden. I also saw what I think was a Small Copper whizz past.

20th October 07:

Mere sands wood in Lancashire: Small white (quite late???), 2 Red admiral, Small tortoiseshell.

Welney in Norfolk on Saturday – small torty, battered small white, small copper, peacock and (oh joy!) a lovely painted lady.

Old Moor in Yorkshire today – zilch.

1 Painted Lady basking alongside field today and 1 Comma in the garden.

Went for a walk along the fields today and noticed the huge number of lapwing, fieldfare and redwing that have appeared since last week... winter is on it's way and it will soon be spring

Occasionally:
Large White, Speckled Wood, Meadow Brown, Red Admiral

A few:
Comma, Peacock.

One each of:
Common Blue (male), Small White, Holly Blue, Brimstone, Clouded Yellow, Adonis Blue (male)

The caterpillar of the Pale Tussock Moth, Calliteara pudibunda, crawled across the pavement on the approaches to Lancing Clump (eastern car park). I put it on the grass verge for the photograph.

Frosty mornings for the last five days have meant no butterflies at all up here in the Alps, despite sunny weather. Until this afternoon, that is, when this solitary pale clouded yellow dropped into my front garden and spent some time feeding on the dandelions on my path:

Clouded Yellow on a Dandelion. The butterflies seen are aften visiting Autumnal Hawkbit on the downs north of Shoreham. Not that many flowering plants remain with nectar.

Autumn is passing by, but no-one seems to have told the Speckled Woods!
x1-2 seen today here in N. Yorks once the sun arrived. nothing else though.

2x Speckled Woods and a Small Copper still in my neck of the woods this morning. 29 Oct.

And today 30 Oct 1 Peacock, 1 Comma and 2 Speckled Wood in my garden. Lets hope that they hang around till Thursday to make them November butterflies.

A solitary red admiral dived past the window while I was visiting my mother in east Bristol this morning (30th October).

Single Red Admiral here too today, 30th Oct.

South Cambs 31 October - one incredibly tatty Peacock. Most certainly not a second brood (too worn) as has been reported in some areas.

Air temperature at the time 12 degrees C but strong sunshine.

On 30th October I saw 1 Speckled Wood at Grove Farm in Greenford, Middlesex. I saw 3 Speckled Woods and 1 Red Admiral in the same location a week earlier. No other butterfly sightings for me. Horsenden Hill produced a big fat zero for me in October. (I was in Scotland the first 2 weeks mind you... Saw a Ruby Tiger caterpillar in Aberdeenshire...)
