Jackharr - NBA were established in Upper Wharfedale long before the "southern" species spread across Yorkshire. However, the book "The Butterflies of Yorkshire" edited by Howard M. Frost, suggests that variations in the range of the two species could have occured in the past and that the butterflies in Wharfedale and Lancashire are possibly hybrids. I'm not aware of any way of distinguishing the species from the uppersides and I'm not sure about the undersides either, though perhaps someone will put me right. I have some underside photos which I will post if anybody wants to study them.

Of course NBA are easy if they are the sub-species with the white spots. But these one aren't.

Perhaps you could post some pictures and somebody might be able to find some diagnostic features.

Interesting to learn that NBA is in Upper Wharfedale. I used to live in nearby Nidderdale and assumed it would be waste of time looking for them. I had my "fix" when I lived in east Scotland a few years earlier.

As I understand the white upper wing spots are not a guide to identification as they can occur in both species, as can the black spots.

We're going off at a tangent here so I've posted an underwing photo in the Identification forum and look forward to the verdict!

Hi Chris - not sure what's happened with your post. The image name seems to contain a session ID. The thumbnail is:

Hi Gruditch,

Not sure what's going on there since a couple of you had the same problem. I've test the "Add image to post" feature and it seems to be working OK now. I've also fixed your entry!

Cheers,

- Pete
