Thank you Trevor, I did go early arriving at 6.30. Unusually I didn't find any roosting at that time - normally I can predict where they will be. Took an hour before my first photo. Maybe down to the weather very hot and misty. Lots of interesting birds - should have taken my binoculars!

Very nice dew-spotted shots there, Katrina. :) SSB is such a lovely species, but I've yet to catch them so early in the day on any of my relatively local spots.

Cheers,

Dave

Botany Bay

Post by Katrina »

I spent a couple of hours at Botany Bay fro about 1-3 ish.
It was peaceful.
I saw about 10 Wood Whites, 4-5 Red Admirals , 1 SWF, about 10 Specked Woods , some Meadow Browns , 5 Brimstones and some Large Skippers.
No WAs or Ringlets.

Thank you Goldie they were an unexpected bonus.
Thank you Pauline might do :D
Thank you Wurzel - lucky shot - I think they must have a super powerful proboscis suck as they only seem to nectar for seconds on each flower.

Back to Black

Post by Katrina »

I went to Ditchling Common today . I just missed 2 BHs on bracken. My time was eventually rewarded by great views of one (through binoculars).
There were plenty of supporting cast including Meadow Browns, SWFS, Marbled Whites, Skippers a caterpillar ?Peacock and an obliging Forester Moth. Thank to Vince for showing me a new area and a pleasure to meet other enthusiasts.

I stopped at a garden centre and was pleased to find this baby robin advertising itself as great for small spaces.

It took me a while to spot the Robin. He/she might even be suggesting
' things to do in June '. Well I know what I would like to have done in June,
but as things stand it will have to be July !. ( starting tomorrow hopefully ).

Stay well,
Trevor.

That photo had me going for a bit Katrina, then when I zoomed in it was blindingly obvious - sometimes you can't see for looking

That's a great shot of the Robin Katrina - like everyone else I couldn't see it for looking! I think your cat is a Peacock. I currently have one on my kitchen bench dying! I believe it was squashed between 2 tree trunks as they were collecting timber from a local site :(

  Cheeky fellow!

Had one in my house a few weeks ago, probably to protest at how I wasn't putting suet pellets outside any more! Once April is in full swing, my Robin should be fending for himself.

Cairngorms and Day Trips

Post by Katrina »

I recently had a trip to the Cairngorms with day trips outside to see Mountain Ringlets and go to Glen Affric.
We were lucky to find the Mountain Ringlets as we were not in quite the right spot looking and after we didn't find any we decided to drive a bit further on when we spotted what looked like 3 people photographing butterflies one of which was Nigel Marven. They kindly showed us the right spot - thank you.
We also think we saw Large Heath there.
Other butterflies seen on the trip were Northern Brown Argus, Dark Green Fritillaries, Small Pearl-Bordered Fritillaries with best count 16 in one area, Ringlets (plentiful ) Small Heaths, a few Common Blues, Meadow Browns and Speckled Woods.
I had some days when the butterflies seems unusually flighty on the other hand I seemed unusually attractive to Large Red Damselflies who kept landing on me.
Highlight of the trip was probably a fresh Large Emerald moth I found out on a walk.
Moths were plentiful and from where we were staying there was usually a few Bordered Whites flying around.
