Need help to identify a butterfly

Just wondered if anyone could help. Two days ago a large dark blue butterfly landed on our windowsill. It was much bigger than say a red admiral and a type I have never seen before a and just wondered if anyone had any idea what type it could be. Thanks

Did it have black-in-orange eyespots on the lower wings, and white markings across all wings? If so it could have been a purple emperor. If not I can only suggest it was a foreign vagrant or release.
